2018 GIPPSLAND WINE COMPANY CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Vineyard: Loch Village Vineyard. Soil type: Yellow and dark loam over volcanic clays.

Notes: The 2018 is a highly aromatic, cool climate Cabernet Sauvignon that is both elegant and powerful. Violets and frangipani, sage and cedarwood with cassis aromas waft from the glass. On the palate, there are fleshier blackcurrant and blackberry characters, with layers of fresh mint, fennel, artichoke, Dutch salted liquorice and charred brisket. It is silky, supple, with fine acidity and well-integrated tobacco leaf French oak notes.

Food matches: Creamy sheep’s milk blue cheese (Roquefort or Prom Country Venus Blue), roast lamb with mint sauce, moussaka, beef short rib or smoked brisket. Label: Brown Hare.

Vineyard: Loch Village Vineyard. Soil type: Yellow and dark loam over volcanic clays.

Notes: The 2018 Chardonnay is French oak barrel fermented. It has powerful, voluptuous dimensions with a graceful structure. On the nose, there are roasted hazelnuts, orange blossom, spiced baked pear, brioche and honeyed baklava notes. Ripe quince, mandarin, nougat, dried thyme, join those characters on the palate with the warm spice and vanillin French oak providing structure and persistence.

Food matches: Vine ash brie, roasted chicken and vegetables, baked salmon. Label: Powerful Owls.

2018 GIPPSLAND WINE COMPANY FUMÉ BLANC

Vineyard: Moyarra Vineyard. Soil type: Yellow and dark loam over volcanic clays.

Notes: The 2018 Fumé Blanc is French oak barrel fermented. It is smoky and full of cupboard spices on the nose from its barrel fermentation, with cool climate, greener notes of asparagus, artichoke, capsicum and hedgerow. The palate is vibrant with lemon and mandarin blossom, lemon and lime acidity and Japanese sancho pepper on the youthful finish.

Food matches: Bento box, asparagus and goat’s cheese, ripe tomatoes, grain bowls. Label: Banksia, Loch Village.

2018 GIPPSLAND WINE COMPANY SYRAH

Vineyard: Rhyll Vineyard on Phillip Island, the westerly edge of the region. Soil type: Basalt derived, clay loam over clay soils, 500 metres from the Bay and two kilometres from Bass Strait.

Notes: The 2018 Syrah is a vivid and complex expression of cool climate Shiraz. Blue garnet in colour, the nose is redolent of red rose petal, rosemary, star anise and blackberry. These characters follow onto the palate with black cherry and forest bramble, blood plum and roasted red capsicum, umami sweet soy and mocha notes, finishing with five-spice and pink peppercorn notes. The delicious, supple mouthfeel is perfectly balanced by an excellent acid line, chalky, slightly grippy tannins and persistent length.

Food matches: Smoked brisket, Shanghai pork fried noodles, portobello mushrooms with pine nuts, aged Comté or Gruyere.

2018 GIPPSLAND WINE GEWÜRZTRAMINER

Vineyard: Wyanga Vineyard from vines planted c. 1970 in East Gippsland near Lakes Entrance. Soil type: Gravelly loam soils over volcanic clays. Notes: The 2018 Gewürztraminer was wild fermented in 20% old oak. It is exotically aromatic of frangipani, rose water, lotus and lychee. Characters of Thai mint, bruised lemongrass, green mango, guava and white peach follow, with spicier notes of cardamom and kaffir lime leaf on the persistent, lush palate. Food matches: Sri Lankan chicken curry and love cakes, chilli crab stir fry, pistachio gelato. Label: Blood Orange, Loch Village.

2019 GIPPSLAND WINE COMPANY CABERNET ROSÉ

Vineyard: Moyarra Vineyard. Soil type: Yellow and dark loam over volcanic clays.

Notes: The 2019 Cabernet Rosé is a vibrant red rose colour, with fragrant strawberry patch, fresh picked mint and red rose petal on the nose. Crisp and crunchy cranberry acidity combines with aromatic ripe strawberry and raspberry on the palate, with a twist of cut rhubarb creating a pleasing sweet and sour interplay.

Food matches: watermelon and feta, yum cha dumplings, steamed mussels. Label: Mateus Rose.

2019 GIPPSLAND WINE COMPANY GUSTOSO

Vineyard: Moyarra Vineyard, Loch Village Vineyard, Jeetho Vineyard. Soil type: Yellow and dark loam over volcanic clays.

Notes: The 2019 ‘Gustoso’ (translated as tasty, savoury, amusing) is a unique field blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Pinot Noir from across three vineyards, that underwent carbonic maceration whole Bunch fermentation. It is a vibrant ruby-garnet colour and the nose bursts with rose petals, tomato leaf, mint jelly, charred meats and bay leaf. On the palate, ripe mulberry and blackberry are balanced by savoury sun-dried tomato, tobacco leaf, dried basil and black olive tapenade. Soft and round in the mouth, with gentle acidity and chalky tannins, it is a very moreish wine.

Food matches: Spit roast lamb, tomato ragu, beef lasagne, wood fired pizza. Label: Loch Village Olive.

2019 GIPPSLAND WINE COMPANY PINOT NOIR

Vineyard: Calulu Vineyard. East Gippsland, near Bairnsdale and Gippsland Lakes. Soil type: Red, silty clay loam over limestone subsoil.

Notes: The 2019 Pinot Noir underwent whole bunch fermentation and is a shiny, black cherry colour. Sanguine and salty liquorice notes, with white pepper and five spice melds with black cherry and blood plum on the complex nose. These elements combine with crisp redcurrant, pine forest floor, foraged wild mushrooms, earthy rhubarb, kalamata olive and blackberry bramble, with fine but grippy tannins and excellent length.

Food matches: Cantonese roast duck, pâtés and terrines, porcini mushroom risotto. Label: Chestnut Teal Duck.

2019 GIPPSLAND WINE COMPANY RIESLING

Notes: The 2019 Riesling grown on this established 35-year-old vineyard shows a German Kabinett Riesling inspiration. Its mellifluous 20 g/L residual sugar presents honeydew melon, jasmine and lemon curd aromas following through on the palate with elder flower, Bosc pear, farmhouse cider, lanolin, and warm, nutmeg and ground ginger spice.

Food matches: Baked ham and bratwurst, spicy South East Asian flavours, smoked salmon. Label: Red Tailed Black Cockatoo.

Zesty notes of lemon sherbet, granny smith apple and pomelo follow, with richer characters of brioche and cashew, honeysuckle and cupboard spices with a creamy mousse on the lively palate.
